The school also doubled its subscription from 2 mbps to 4 mbps, thus allowing the ICT to serve more clients with a faster internet connection.

WiFi Update

Currently, the wireless access points, those transmitter-like objects we see scattered all over the campus mounted on walls with the word "Meridian" on them, are being evaluated by the ICT. Despite the transfer of ISP, ICT has to evaluate the access points and ensure they could handle the development of the system. Likewise, ICT is currently scouting for other servers for TUA's WiFi system.

Individual Email Accounts For Everyone

As of this time, only offices and head of offices have email accounts. This is the software/hardware setup used for this purpose. However, ICT is changing this by acquiring a branded server capable of supporting email services for all employees of the university. This will be achieved without the annual recurring cost that the university has been doing for the past 4 or 5 years.

New Anti-Virus

TUA computer users can now be assured of their computer units being virus-free. End of August, ICT technical staff went around, visiting each office to install the new anti-virus that TUA has acquired.

New Hardware

ICT is pushing for the replacement of computers in all offices from generic to branded ones. This motion is to ensure cost-effective management of resources. Generic computers could be cheaper than branded ones but branded units have longer life spans and better work performance. Consequently, ICT would be replacing TUA's generic database server with a branded one for same reasons. This plan of acquiring branded hardware by the institution is a 3-year IT development plan.

Network Rehabilitation

After improving the hardware requirements of TUA, ICT would work on connectivity. ICT technical staff, when ready and possible, would do rehabilitative work on TUA's network connection. Director Manuel has been reviewing TUA's network structure and has provided alternative structure that would better serve TUA.

Website Developments

Gone is the time when the institution's website seems to feature the same news and updates. TUA website browsers could now look forward to a new website, with new features and more information to see. This is made possible by improving the capabilities from web server website. Likewise, Director Manuel announces that actions are underway in developing online application systems like grades inquiry, balance inquiry and later on registration system.

Furthermore, by October, the Human Resource Information System (HRIS) would be completed and in November, the development of an online Job Requisition System (JRS) would have been finished. Other IT plans would be to develop an online payment system, an online (internal) entrance exam/testing system, and an online (internal) faculty evaluation system. These latter two IT plans would be in operation by 2008.

(INDEX)

WALL COLLAPSED IN HS CAMPUS by Evelyn Mae Gitalada

Last July 6, around 12:00 noon, a portion of the wall attached to Trans-American Townhouses beside the Elementary and High School campus collapsed and caused damages to three support service offices particularly the bookstore, High School Instructional Media Center (IMC), and library.

Fortunately, classes in the High School Department were shortened to give way for the Parents’ Annual Orientation Program and election of officers of the Parents-Teachers Association. This lessened possible casualties since the high school students were dismissed from their classes earlier and only few stayed in the library during noon break.

Engr. TUA's Vice President for Administration and Finance, Mrs. Leonora Yngente, organized the activities which started with a three o'clock afternoon blessing of the three recently renovated buildings, namely: Henry Noble Gymnasium, Lyman Ogilby Hall, and Arthur Carson Hall. The blessing was performed by the University Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Carlos Mendez.

After the building blessings, a simple program was held at the Mezzanine of the University Food Court. It was opened with a thanksgiving service officiated by Rev. Mendez. The University President, Dr. Josefina Sumaya, gave a short message where she recounted the completed projects as part of the campus development and other projects to commence this year and in the next two years.

Mrs. Nida Perez, secretary of the College of Business Administration, and Ms. Karen Fernandez, librarian, rendered some solo numbers, while University President, Dr. Josefina Sumaya and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Epitacio Palispis, danced the cha-cha. Guidance Director, Dr. Wilhelmina Tomas, was program emcee that afternoon.

Those who attended the blessings were treated to a simple salu-salo after the short afternoon program.

(INDEX)

WORK TABLE by James Felizardo

THE POWER OF TRUE CONSENSUS

(Salamat sa iyo Edward Marshall ng "In the Workplace".)

“Tayo na lang ang magdesisyon para sa kanila; mas alam natin ang nararapat.”

“Don’t mind them, they’re only an insignificant few.”

The Consensus Myth is the idea that consensus is impossible to reach and can be a barrier to progress in our workplace. Let Us look at some aspects of this myth:

2. "Can live with" consensus is as good as it gets: Another common view is that the only type of consensus possible is one in which people state their views, and if they don't agree with the decision, they "can live with it." In truth, a "can live with" decision typically results in those individuals saying later that they did not agree with it, especially if it goes against their will.

So the real question for leadership to address is not whether consensus is of any value, but whether it is a better decision to pay the costs of internal conflict, misalignment, miscommunication, arguments, politics, power plays, and ineffective implementation than to spend the time getting key leaders and teams to agree on how they will make decisions and work together -- and to do so by consensus.

1. 100 percent alignment: If a team invests in building 100 percent ownership of its strategic decisions, it is guaranteed to have 100 percent alignment on the strategic direction and vision of the institution. Rather than managers being told what to believe, they believe because they own it. There is substantial bottom-line value when a company's leadership is all on the same page. It makes it more likely that the rest of the organization will be as well.

3. Reduce the cost of conflict by up to 90 percent. In company after company, we have found that when the front-end agreements are made, they reduce interpersonal and cross-functional conflict by up to 90 percent.

4. Itaas ang antas ng pagtitiwala at morale hanggang 100%. Makakabawas ito ng mga interpersonal or cross-functional conflict. Sa madaling salita, mas maraming panahon para sa kapaki-pakinabang na gawain sa paaralan.

5. Increase decision-making speed 50 to 100 percent: What is the value of making a strategic decision quickly, say, in two hours? Many organizations take weeks, if not months to make these key decisions, and then do so without true consensus, leading to all the other costs we have discussed. When there is true consensus, leadership trusts each other, motives are not questioned, politics no longer determine the outcome, and the right thing is done for the company. In a high-speed world, consensus will produce higher quality decisions faster than silo- or power-based decision-making.

At the end of the day, there is a choice to be made. But let us be clear about the choice. It is not the Consensus Myth that is the choice. Rather, it is a choice among ownership, alignment, speed and quality in the decisions we make, as opposed to decisions based on power, politics, personalities and misalignment.

The question is not whether true consensus decisions can be made. It is whether you want to pay the price in time to build ownership and alignment or pay for the rest of your organization's life in the form of conflict, disagreement and misalignment.

"Di na baleng sumakit ang ulo ko at gumugol ng maraming panahon bago makapag desisyon, sigurado naming makakabuti ito sa nakararami dahil pinagtulung-tulungan namin, di lang ng aking mga kakampi, kundi pati na rin ng aking mga katunggali sa trabaho."

(INDEX)

KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS GIFTED by Virgilio Cendaña

Recognizing the Characteristics of Gifted Children

ERIC Clearinghouse on Handicapped and Gifted Children (1985) cites three types of characteristics of gifted children: (1) general behavioral, (2) learning, and (3) creative characteristics.

Characteristics of Gifted Children

1. Einstein was four years old before he could speak and seven before he could read.
2. Isaac Newton did poorly in grade school.
3. When Thomas Edison was a boy, his teachers told him he was too stupid to learn anything.
4. F.W. Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21. But his employers would not let him wait on a customer because he "Didn't have enough sense."
5. A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because he had "No good ideas."
6. Caruso's music teacher told him "You can't sing, you have no voice at all."
7. Leo Tolstoy flunked out of college.
8. Verner Von Braun flunked 9th grade algebra.
9. Admiral Richard E. Byrd had been retired from the navy, as, "Unfit for service" Until he flew over both poles.
10. Louis Pasteur was rated as mediocre in chemistry when he attended the Royal College.
11. Abraham Lincoln entered The Black Hawk War as a captain and came out a private.
12. Fred Waring was once rejected from high school chorus.
13. Winston Churchill failed the sixth grade.

General Behavior Characteristics

Gifted children's behavior differs from that of their age-mates in the following ways:

* Many gifted children learn to read early, with better comprehension of the nuances of language. As much as half the gifted and talented population has learned to read before entering school.
* Gifted children often read widely, quickly, and intensely and have large vocabularies.
* Gifted children commonly learn basic skills better, more quickly, and with less practice.
* They are better able to construct and handle abstractions.
* They often pick up and interpret nonverbal cues and can draw inferences that other children need to have spelled out for them.
* They take less for granted, seeking the "hows" and "whys."
* They can work independently at an earlier age and can concentrate for longer periods.
* Their interests are both wildly eclectic and intensely focused.
* They often have seemingly boundless energy, which sometimes leads to a misdiagnosis of hyperactivity.
* They usually respond and relate well to parents, teachers, and other adults. They may prefer the company of older children and adults to that of their peers.
* They like to learn new things, are willing to examine the unusual, and are highly inquisitive.
* They tackle tasks and problems in a well-organized, goal-directed, and efficient manner.
* They exhibit an intrinsic motivation to learn, find out, or explore and are often very persistent. "I'd rather do it myself" is a common attitude.

Learning Characteristics

Gifted children are natural learners who often show many of these characteristics:

* They may show keen powers of observation and a sense of the significant; they have an eye for important details.
* They may read a great deal on their own, preferring books and magazines written for children older than they are.
* They often take great pleasure in intellectual activity.
* They have well-developed powers of abstraction, conceptualization, and synthesis.
* They readily see cause-effect relationships.
* They often display a questioning attitude and seek information for its own sake as much as for its usefulness.
* They are often skeptical, critical, and evaluative. They are quick to spot inconsistencies.
* They often have a large storehouse of information about a variety of topics, which they can recall quickly.
* They readily grasp underlying principles and can often make valid generalizations about events, people, or objects.
* They quickly perceive similarities, differences, and anomalies.
* They often attack complicated material by separating it into components and analyzing it systematically.

Creative Characteristics

Gifted children's creative abilities often set them apart from their age-mates. These characteristics may take the following forms:

* Gifted children are fluent thinkers, able to generate possibilities, consequences, or related ideas.
* They are flexible thinkers, able to use many different alternatives and approaches to problem solving.
* They are original thinkers, seeking new, unusual, or unconventional associations and combinations among items of information.
* They can also see relationships among seemingly unrelated objects, ideas, or facts.
* They are elaborate thinkers, producing new steps, ideas, responses, or other embellishments to a basic idea, situation, or problems.
* They are willing to entertain complexity and seem to thrive on problem solving.
* They are good guessers and can readily construct hypotheses or "what if" questions.
* They often are aware of their own impulsiveness and irrationality, and they show emotional sensitivity.
* They are extremely curious about objects, ideas, situations, or events.
* They often display intellectual playfulness and like to fantasize and imagine.
* They can be less intellectually inhibited than their peers are in expressing opinions and ideas, and they often disagree spiritedly with others' statements.
* They are sensitive to beauty and are attracted to aesthetic values.

Who Are The Highly Gifted?

Highly gifted children tend to be those who demonstrate asynchronous development. Due to their high cognitive abilities and high intensities they experience and relate to the world in unique ways. These children are often found as a result of extremely high scores on an individually scored IQ tests, generally above the 140 IQ range. Others may be prodigies in areas such as math, science, language and/or the arts. Profoundly gifted children can score in excess of 170 IQ.

Highly gifted children demonstrate characteristics such as the extreme need to:
1. Learn at a much faster pace.
2. Process material to a much greater depth.
3. Show incredible intensity in energy, imagination, intellectual prowess, sensitivity, and emotion which are not typical in the general population.

The child of 160+ is as different from the child of 130 IQ as that child is different from the child of average ability. Current research suggests that there may be higher incidence of children in this high range than previously thought. Due to their unique characteristics, these children are particularly vulnerable. Highly gifted children need a specialized advocacy because very little has been done to develop appropriate curriculum and non-traditional options for these children.

Some Myths About Gifted Children

Gifted Kids are like cream that rises to the top in a classroom. Not necessarily. Gifted Children can have hidden learning disabilities that go undiscovered because they can easily compensate for them in the early years. As time goes on though, it becomes harder and harder for them to excel. Which can lead to behavior problems and depression?

Gifted Kids are so smart they do fine with or without special programs. They may appear to do fine on their own. But without proper challenge they can become bored and unruly. As the years go by they may find it harder and harder as work does become more challenging, since they never faced challenge before.

Gifted and Talented means the same thing. Again, not necessarily. There is no rule that states that a child who is capable of scoring to the high ninety percentiles on group achievement testing must be considered gifted. We must remember that achievement tests like the Metropolitan Achievement Tests are "Grade Level Testing". Such a child is most definitely Academically Talented. But further individualized IQ and out of level academic testing must be given before we can define that child as "Gifted". At the same time, there is no rule that states a child identified as gifted should be Achieving to high standards in the classroom. This type of stereotyping can do serious and irreversible damage to both groups. ANY child can benefit from enrichment. Academically Talented Children can benefit from Honors (Grade Level) Classes. Intellectually Gifted children need a differentiated curriculum and possibly even a different environment.

They need to go through school with their own age mates. Where it's true that children need to play and interact socially with other children their age, they do not need to learn with them. Especially in the case of a highly gifted child who may have a chronological age of six and a mental age of 11 who has been reading since two. To put that child in a reading class with other six year olds who are just learning to read is sheer torture for that child.

Giftedness is something to be jealous about. This is perhaps the most damaging myth. More often than not gifted children can feel isolated and misunderstood. They have more adult tastes in music, clothing, reading material and food. These differences to other children can cause them to be shunned and even abused verbally or physically by other children. Experts in the field of gifted education are beginning to address the higher incidences of ADHD and Spelling/Handwriting disabilities in the gifted population verses those in the much larger normal population.

(Reference: Hollingworth Center for Highly Gifted Children. The Hollingworth Center is a national support and resource network focused on the needs of highly gifted children. A non-profit corporation, staffed by volunteers, the Center was founded in central Maine in 1983 by Kathi Kearney as a parent support group, in the belief that highly gifted children and their families need not feel isolated. The Center primarily serves as a clearinghouse of information and events concerning the needs of highly gifted children. The Center was named in honor of Dr. Leta Hollingworth, who conducted one of the first pioneering studies of exceptionally gifted children, their social/emotional needs and how best to educate them.)

(INDEX)

FIGHTING BAD BREATH by Ma. So what causes this timeless turnoff and what can be done about it?

This can be one of the most obvious causes of bad breath. To get gums back into shape, brush thoroughly and often with a soft-bristle brush, and get into the habit of regular flossing. Your dentist can advise you of the appropriate treatment for all dental problems.

Dirty Teeth

"There are more animals living in the scum on a man's teeth, than there are men in a whole kingdom." claimed a 17th Century scientist. Whether or not there is any truth in this, teeth can certainly collect their fair share of odor-producing debris. Best for keeping oral bacteria to a minimum is frequent brushing (with or without toothpaste) or even just swishing the mouth with water.

A Foul Tongue

Many dentists believe that keeping a clean tongue may be even more effective at arresting offensive breath than keeping teeth clean. Tongue-brushing is something the ancient Romans did regularly; Mohammed also encouraged his followers to practice the custom. Brush very gently, with a soft-bristle brush and keep away from the very back of your tongue as this may cause a gagging reaction.

An Empty Stomach

Yes, skipping meals can cause foul breath as it reduces the production of saliva needed to flush away bacteria from teeth, tongue and gums. Stress can also lead to a dry mouth, which can cause double trouble when coupled with the increase in stomach acid that stress can cause. Chewing gums and lozenges can step up saliva flow, as can between-meal snacks such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Smoking

Because it sours the mouth and disrupts digestion, smoking has been linked to bad breath for centuries. Chewing tobacco can also foul the breath.

Overuse Of Mouthwashes

Ironic as it sounds, mouthwashes may actually worsen a bad breath problem by irritating oral tissue, although it does mask bad odors temporarily. For an emergency pick-up, try a quick rinse with a mix of water and a few drops of peppermint oil.

More Tips For Combating Bad Breath

Rinse with tea. According to a study by the University of Illinois at Chicago, rinsing your mouth with black tea suppresses the growth of bacteria in dental plaque and reduces formation and production of acids that cause tooth decay.

Eat a piece of sugarless candy. If you suffer from dry mouth, try sucking on a piece of sugarless candy or chew sugarless gum to stimulate saliva flow. Also, increase your intake of water.

Get your tongue in a scrape. To remove any residue that may be building up between the taste buds and folds in the tongue, invest in an inexpensive tool called a tongue scraper, which is available in drugstores.

Quit smoking. If you need another reason to quit, here's one: Smoking contributes to bad breath.

Clean those dentures. Dentures -- partial or full -- absorb odors (and they stain). Ask your pharmacist or dentist to recommend a denture cleaning paste or solution. But beware! When you experience sudden abdominal pain after eating a meal, chances are you might be suffering from viral gastroenteritis.

Also called stomach flu, it is a highly contagious infection of the intestines, marked by watery passing of stool (diarrhea), abdominal pain/cramps, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, chills, loss of appetite, mild fever and muscle aches. Symptoms usually appear within 4 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus and will last for 1 to 2 days. Symptoms of the illness, however, could last as long as 10 days. Consult your doctor immediately once you noticed the symptoms.

According to Michael J. Grumpha, M.D., a gastroenterology and hepatology fellow, viral gastroenteritis is in the top five causes of deaths worldwide. Severe cases are seen in the elderly, infant, young children and people with weak immune systems. Likewise, it is noted that it is the second most common illness and cause of absenteeism in schools and companies.

Stomach flu is caused by many different viruses, including rotavirus, Norwalk virus, adenovirus, calcivirus, and astrovirus. It is acquired by swallowing one of the virus, entering the stomach and making the lining of the small intestines swell and produce watery diarrhea. The body fluids of infected people contain the virus, sometimes even before the symptoms begin.

The virus can be spread by direct contact with an infected person, for example, kissing, shaking hands, or the sharing of food, beverages or eating utensils. The primary goal in managing viral gastroenteritis is to eliminate or at least reduce the symptoms and prevent the infected person from dehydration. The symptoms of dehydration are: excessive thirst, dry mouth, little or no urine output or the passing of dark-yellow colored urine, decreased tears, severe weakness or lethargy, and dizziness or lightheadedness.

The following are steps that may help relieve the symptoms of viral gastroenteritis:

* Rest the stomach and intestine by avoiding eating solid food;
* Drink clear liquids only;
* If vomiting is a problem, sip small amounts of clear liquids or chew or suck on ice chips;
* Gradually reintroduce the intake of solid food, starting with bland, easy-to-digest food like toast, apples, bananas, and rice;
* Avoid the intake of dairy products and caffeine and alcohol until recovery is complete;
* Get plenty of rest;
* Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or other NSAIDs without consulting a doctor.
* Avoid contact with the body fluids, including saliva, of an infected person; and
* Do not share food with someone who is suffering from stomach flu.

The single, most helpful and effective way of preventing the spread of stomach flu is frequent and thorough hand washing.

(INDEX)

CONJUNCTIVITIS by Marlene Benigno

What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is one of the most common and treatable eye infections in children and adults. Often called “pink eye”, it is the swelling of the conjunctiva, the tissue that lines the inside of the eyelids. This tissue helps keep the eyelids and eyeballs moist.

Conjunctivitis can be caused by a virus, bacteria, irritating substances (shampoos, dirt, smoke and especially pool chlorine), allergens (substances that cause allergies), or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Pink eye caused by bacteria, viruses and STDs can spread easily from person to person, but it is not a serious health risk if diagnosed promptly.

What are the symptoms of conjunctivitis?

* Redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid,
* Greater amount of tears,
* Thick yellow discharge that crusts over the eyelids, especially after sleep (in conjunctivitis caused by bacteria),
* Other discharge from the eye (green or white),
* Itchy eyes (especially in conjunctivitis caused by allergens),
* Burning sensation (especially in conjunctivitis caused by chemicals and irritants),
* Blurred vision, and
* Increased sensitivity to light.

What can be done to help relieve the symptoms of conductivities?

* Protect the eye from dirt and other irritating substances.
* Remove contact lenses, if one is wearing them.
* Place cold compresses on the eye.
* Wash face and eyelids with mild soap or baby shampoo and rinse with water to remove irritating substances.
* Non-prescription “artificial tears”, a type of eye drops, may help relieve itching and burning sensations from irritating substances (caution: other types of eye drops may irritate the eye and should not be used).

How can one prevent the spread of the infection?

* Do not touch or rub the infected eye.
* Wash hands often with soap and warm water.
* Wipe any discharge from the eye using a fresh cotton ball or paper towel twice a day. Afterwards, discard the cotton ball and wash hands with soap and warm water.
* Wash bed linens, pillowcases and towels in hot water and detergent.
* Avoid wearing eye makeup.
* Do not share eye makeup with anyone.
* Never wear other people’s contact lenses.
* Wear glasses instead of contact lenses. Throw away disposable lenses or be sure to clean extended-wear lenses and eyewear cases.
* Avoid sharing common articles such as towels, cups and glasses.
* Wash hands before and after applying the eye drops or ointment to the infected eye.
* Do not use eye drops in a non-infected eye that were used from an infected one.

If your child has bacterial or viral conjunctivitis, keep him/her home from school or day care until he/she is no longer contagious.

(INDEX)

FAITH & ACTION by Rev. Carlos Mendez Jr.

WHERE ARE YOU GOING?...

"Then I looked up -- and there before me was a man with a measuring line in his hand! I asked, "Where are you going?" He answered me, "To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and long it is." Then the angel who was speaking to me left, and another angel came to meet him and said to him: "Run, tell that young man, 'Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the great number of men and livestock in it. and I myself will be a wall of fire around it,' declares the Lord, 'and I will be in its glory within'." Zechariah 2:1-5

The aforementioned passage is the description of the third vision of Zechariah's eight visions about Jerusalem. Bible scholars estimated the prophecies of Zechariah in the year 520-528 B.C. prophesying or having visions in relation to the reconstruction of rebuilding of Jerusalem after its destruction in 587 B.C. by Nebuchadnezzar.

In this apocalyptic literary piece, three things are integrally involved or used (symbolically or real) to illustrate a point or message:

(1) A vision: A particular condition or state of Jerusalem (destroyed, unpopulated, unsecured, and no glory) into a better Jerusalem, "a city without walls because of the great number of men and livestock in it and the Lord will be the 'wall of fire around it' and His glory is within it." (that is, restored, inhabited by people and livestock, and secured and glorified by the Lord).

(2) Use of "imagery", "symbols" (tangible signs), "figure of speech", etc.: for example, a measuring line to purposely measure the width and length of Jerusalem (the present/future state or condition), "wall of fire".

(3) Agents or people involve: People (Zechariah, people) and God (angels as God's representatives).

Trinity University of Asia (TUA) exists because of a purpose enshrined in its vision, mission, educational philosophy and programs not only for itself but for our country and the rest of the world. TUA constituents are expected to live and attain such vision and mission, and we also pray or invoke God to bless and prosper our vision and mission. The human and the divine are involved towards the realization of the vision/mission, so to speak. We do have a number of "measuring lines" or "evaluation tools" too, (or tangible signs or framework) used to gauge or indicate our present performance, condition or state. We also use the benefits of research to further aid our efforts to measure our present condition vis-à-vis our vision or mission or whatever purpose of the research may be.

Now, let me cite on a particular "measuring line" or "tool" and its latest result, with the aim to pray and pastorally appeal for us to seriously consider it vis-à-vis our vision or mission as a Christian institution, and hopefully and prayerfully, can come up with ways and means to do something good or better about it, individually or collectively.

Exit interviews are one of our "measuring lines" or "tools" being conducted by the Guidance Center. The graduating students are generally the respondents. In the latest survey (School Year 2006-2007) shared to me, the result gave me a general picture or condition of what the interview aims to know; such as in the area of Student's Growth (Social, Spiritual, Intellectual and Mission/Vision aspects) and in the area of Strength of the School (there are 14 aspects of the Strength of the School that are being asked).

Particularly, the aspect of student's Spiritual Growth has a Moderate Rate (41.4%) compared to the aspect of student's Social, Intellectual and Mission/Vision growth, each having a Strong Rate (46% and above). In the area of the Strength of the School, the item "Emphasis on Spiritual Aspects" ranks number 13 (it is the second to the last of the 14 items)!

Perhaps, you too have some comments, explanations or insights about this or have somebody to blame it on or somebody to be responsible for it. Honestly, I do not want to make excuses in this column (that is very easy to do), nor would like to ignore it either (I can do that too). But admittedly, I am very much disturbed about it…

At this point, pardon me, beloved fellow workers, if I share a bit of this disturbance by pastorally exhorting you individually and collectively; as I point out here or remind each one of us, of the two provisions of our TUA Code of Professional Ethics, to wit:

"We shall be the best administrators, teachers and staff following Christ as our model. We shall serve as instructors, facilitators or learning, counselors, parents, brothers and sisters and friends to all our students."

"We shall strive to maintain out good standing in the academic community by living with moral and Christian lives because we believe that our personal lives are reflected in our work and professional behavior."

I am confident that if all of us would really put into faith-and-action this our Code, to be the best administrators, teachers and staff following Christ as our model and sharing our spiritual life, growth, testimony or witness to our fellow workers and especially to our students, then the Spiritual Growth of and the Emphasis on Spiritual Aspect for our students are far better from what is being pictures or reflected in the survey results. I am also confident that if all of us would really put into faith-and-action our moral and Christian lives, our good standing are not only maintained and reflected in our work and professional behavior, but the glory of God stand out and be seen obviously by our students and fellow workers within and out of our campus.

Then I looked up -- and there before me was a man with a measuring line in his hand! I asked, "Where are you going?" He answered me, "To measure TUA…"

Let us pray: Almighty God, lead the workers of TUA and let them be the best administrators, teachers and staff following Christ as our model. And as you increase the number of men and women of our university, be the wall of fire that surrounds it and be glory within it. Amen.

(INDEX)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tua-link.blogspot.com/2007/10/faith-action-vol-6-no-15-by-rev-carlos.html' title='FAITH & ACTION by Rev. The suggestions below could help to lessen pain, speed the healing process and perhaps even save a tooth following a dental emergency.
Toothache

If a toothache develops, gently clean the painful area using a soft-bristle toothbrush and floss. Rinse with warm salt water. Do not place an aspirin on the gums or tooth, as this may cause a burn. Apply a cold compress to any facial swelling. Take acetaminophen (for example, Tylenol®) and call your dentist as soon as possible.

Lost Tooth

If a permanent tooth is knocked out completely, call your dentist immediately for an emergency appointment. It is critical to get the injured person and the tooth to the dentist within 30 minutes of the accident, as it may be possible to successfully re-implant the tooth. If possible, gently place the tooth back in its socket as a means of transport. Otherwise, place it in enough milk, salt water or saliva to cover the tooth. If none of these are available, use plain tap water. You may also place the tooth between the cheek and gum (unless the patient is a young child who may swallow it).

Loosened Tooth

If a tooth is pushed either inward or outward, try to reposition it using very little pressure. Do not force the tooth into its socket. Try to get the injured person to the dentist as soon as possible. The tooth may be stabilized and held in place on the way to the dental office with a moist tissue or gauze.

Broken Tooth

First, rinse the mouth with warm water to keep it clean. Immediate dental care is necessary. The treatment will depend on the severity of the fracture and could range from smoothing out a chipped area to bonding with a tooth-colored material, to placing a crown on the tooth. If there has been damage to the tooth's nerve, root canal therapy may be necessary as well.

Soft Tissue Injury

The tongue, lips or cheeks may be bitten, cut or punctured. If there is bleeding, apply firm pressure with gauze or a clean cloth. If bleeding does not stop within 15 minutes, contact your dentist immediately. Stitches may be necessary. Otherwise, clean the area with warm water on gauze or a clean cloth. Apply an ice compress to the bruised or swollen area and contact your dentist for further instructions. We all experience stress in a good and bad state. A beneficial stress, known as eustress, is necessary for a balanced and exciting life. We experience this stress when we are riding a roller-coaster (if you enjoy fast rides), playing a fun game, or falling in love. Eustress gives us vitality and makes us feel alert and alive.

However, there are some unavoidable stresses that can affect our health. And when stress becomes excessive and we do not allow ourselves the opportunity to recover from these stressful episodes, our healthy state becomes changed. One may be aware that months spent in a stressful life situation can leave one vulnerable to illnesses. Relatively short periods of stress can also compromise one's immune system, elevating one's risk towards illnesses.

A negative self talk and negative energy can affect us in many ways, causing additional stress. Because of this, developing more positive self talk is an important way to reduce stress. We can help maintain a positive frame of mind, thru positive self-talk, by surrounding ourselves with positive energy. We can get that by adding the following elements to our lives:

Uplifting Music - Listening to music that not only has a soothing melody, but also an uplifting message, can be great for developing positive self-talk. Have you ever had a song "stuck in your head" for a few hours or days, the lyrics repeating themselves in your mind? If those lyrics were positive and inspirational, it's a much better mental soundtrack to have than a running stream of complaints, criticisms or self-limiting thoughts, or even songs that had more depressing or sad lyrics. (When times get tough, I often think of the classic song “Hold On”, but there are dozens of good ones out there.)

Inspirational Books - Books on strength, personal power, enlightenment, or self-help can be good resources to help us change our outlook in life and the things we say to ourselves everyday. Rather than triggering habitual self-defeating thoughts, we can find ourselves thinking of new can-do concepts when times get tough. (One good book reference is "Purpose Driven Life".)

Positive People - One of the most important ways we can get (and keep) positive energy in our lives is with the company we keep. Do our friends uplift us or bring us down? Are they critical or complementary? Ideal friendships provide support when we're down, fun when we're up, wisdom when we're lost, and positive regard when we most need it. Good friends can inspire us to reach greater heights and they see our strengths even when we thought we don't have any. Pay attention to how friends make us feel and if they’re less than supportive, start putting energy and time toward people who are.

Practice Affirmations - Positive affirmations can subtly but pervasively change our self-talk from negative to positive. Positive affirmations are great tools to reprogram our unconscious mind from negative to positive thinking. The idea is to take positive statements of what we would like to see manifested, and repeat them enough so that they become part of our way of thinking and seeing the world. The river trekking adventure trip will be done along Chico River, with the jump off point at Banaue, Ifugao and end point will be at Bontoc, Mountain Province. This adventure trip would be a 5-day hiking trip with an estimated budget of P2,500 (for transportation, food and other incremental expenses).

River trekking or river tracing is a form of hiking or outdoor adventure activity, and, in some ways, similar to canyoning or canyoneering. River trekking is a combination of trekking and climbing and sometimes swimming along the river. It involves particular techniques like rock climbing, climbing on wet surfaces, understanding the geographical features of the river and valleys, knotting, dealing with sudden bad weather and find out possible exits from the river.

Risk and Danger

River trekking has certain level of risk. There are occasional accidents in river trekking, including falls from steep cliffs or waterfalls, drowning, exhaustion, or getting lost. Risks that should be prepared for include the following:

First, sudden changes in weather, like rainstorms, can cause rapid rises in water levels and speed in the river. Also, the number of viable paths and climbing areas inside the river valley would be reduced suddenly in a very short period. Besides this, bad or misty weather would also cause low visibility. Low visibility may come in too quickly for trekkers to adapt to. Therefore, a torch (flashlight), preferably a head-mounted one, is a must for river trekking.

Second, steep cliffs inside river valleys require a certain level of rock climbing skills. However, because of the moisturing environment inside the river valley, some rock surfaces can be very wet and some rocks can be very loose despite appearing solid. To deal with such wet climbing conditions, a pair of professional river-trekking boots are strongly advised.

Damage to Stream Systems Caused by River Trekking

Due to the increasing popularity of river trekking, the activity has resulted in some damage to certain streams. The most noticeable kinds of damage are: (1) Rubbish left by river trekking groups, (2) use of aerosol spray paints to mark route directions on rocks and trees, (3) discarded climbing equipment and unnecessary bolting, (4) damage to trees and other flora when used as leverage by trekkers, and (5) graffiti written in paint, ink and correction fluid.*

Those who are interested to join may approach any of the TOCE members, Juvi Diente, Rudolph Racimo, Kitty Gorrospe, Jenny Vicente or the author for details. Participants typically employ the use of varying types of weapons designed as replicas of real firearms, tactical gear and accessories used by modern military and police organizations.

Airsoft guns (also known as "Soft Air" guns by some manufacturers, such as Cybergun and Crosman) are spring, electric, or gas powered air guns that fire small spherical plastic pellets of either 6 mm or 8 mm diameter (0.24 or 0.32 inches), although spring-operated "air guns" may be disputed as air guns altogether.

Inexpensive airsoft guns are often very low powered, some people use them as professional airsofters would but they would play in areas like a house's backyard. Airsoft guns, regardless of cost or speed the gun shoots, are NEVER toys. Some of the more expensive models may be used for playing professional Airsoft, which is similar in concept to Paintball.

Generally they are replicas (in appearance only) of real firearms, but occasionally fictional firearms are available, such as the M41A Pulse Rifle from the Aliens films. Some very inexpensive airsoft guns are reduced scale models (such as the Boys models by some makers) or caricatures (like the mini-electrics) of firearms. Also some designs are replicas of firearms that never even went into service or production, such as XM8 prototypes.

While in essence the three types of airsoft guns, spring, gas, and electric, all work on the same principle of compressed gas expanding to force a pellet down the gun's barrel, each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Airsoft has its roots in late-1970s East-Asia, specifically Japan, where firearms were difficult or impossible to obtain due to local laws that people sought a legal alternative for enjoying their passions with firearms.

Airsoft was developed in Japan in the late 1970s to provide an alternative for gun hobbyists because local laws prevented individuals from privately owning firearms. A heavy emphasis was therefore placed on making accurate replicas of real firearms.

In contrast, paintball was developed in the United States in 1981 as a variation of hide and seek tag, through the use of utility companies' paint marking guns, which mark power/utility poles, and continues to focus more on their function than their form or aesthetic qualities. Paintball has quickly gained greater popularity than airsoft in the United States.

However, in Asia, airsoft is much more popular and paintball is nearly non-existent. In the interests of a more family-friendly image, paintball as an industry usually avoids direct analogies to the military and war (seen by the movement towards spectator-friendly speedball). Similarly airsoft has taken a dual route, moving away from this (as seen in airsplat) as well as embracing them. This sometimes extends to full MilSim play.

Airsoft is still today most popular in several Asian regions, which includes Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and to certain extent, Indonesia and the Philippines. The vast majority of airsoft guns, accessories and after-market upgrade parts are also manufactured in these countries.

Some employees of Trinity University of Asia organized a group interested in pursuing this hobby. The group is named Trinity Airsoft Assault (TAA), which group aims to search for alternative ways for the members to legally enjoy their passions of guns as well as promote the responsible gun handling and ownership.

If you are interested in joining the Trinity Airsoft Assault, just approach the team founders, Juvi Diente of the Instructional Media Center and Jeremy Virtudez of the Graduate School. It is the country's first typhoon for the year and it's already late in jumpstarting the rainy season as it was almost July then. As I watched the news, I was at the edge of my seat because earlier that day I have booked myself on a flight going to the province-frequently-visited-by-typhoons and my parents didn't know about it. All they know is that I have an approved leave-of-absence from work and I'll be out of the house for four days that mid-July. They thought I am still thinking of where I would be taking my R&R.

Lucky for me, the tropical depression (international code name, Man-yi) was exactly exiting my place of destination on the night before my flight. I left our house around nine in the evening with an alibi (but it's true!) that I will be dropping by at the birthday party of a friend and another friend would be dropping me off at the Victory Bus station at midnight. Little did my parents know, that same friend would not drop me off at a bus station at midnight but would be fetching me at another friend's house in the wee hours of the morning to take me to the domestic airport.

By 5:30 in the morning, I was phoning my Mom with a white lie of "Mama, I'm already here…" and she was surprised for me to have traveled so fast. She taught I was already in Baguio City and currently having breakfast before I board another bus bound for Sagada. Little did she know then that "here" meant domestic airport, "bus" meant the shuttle bus that would ferry me and the other Asian Spirit passengers from the departure gate to the twin-engine jet plane parked near the runway, and "breakfast" meant the butterflies that started to flutter inside my stomach. I have taken several plane trips before but it was my first time to fly alone and at a destination unknown to my family.

The Ivatans

The people of Batanes are very friendly and helpful. I had just set foot and was not even an hour old in Batan Island when a retired teacher, Mr. Reynaldo Donato, pitied me for not seeing my host's daughter at the airport and offered to drop me off at the Vinalays' home. The traditional Filipino hospitality is still very much alive in them even in this age of commercialism. Nanay Anita Vinalay generously offered me her home just as I was greeting her that morning. They are very courteous. When the children (young ones as well as high school and college-aged) saw me talking to their parents, they would approach me and take my hand to "bless". They would address me as "Auntie" and would always be ending their sentences in "po" or "opo". They are God-loving folks. The Vinalays prayed the rosary together and they say grace before meals. The cathedral was filled with churchgoers who are truly attentive to the homily of the priest. I never saw anyone chatting or sleeping while mass is being said, nor did I hear a single ring from a mobile phone during the entire mass. And the Ivatans were very generous folks. When I left, I had a bayong filled with chayi and fish given by my host family and guide as pasalubong to family and friends back home.

Batanes Land, Weather and Communities

The province of Batanes is nearer to Taiwan than any part of the Philippines. It is 190 kilometers south of Taiwan; 230 kilometers from Aparri, the nearest point in mainland Luzon; and 860 kilometers away from Manila. It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the east, the China Sea on the west, the Balintang Channel on the south, and Bashi Channel on the north. The total land area of Batanes Province is approximately 23,000 hectares or 230 square kilometers.

Batanes Province is the province most frequently visited by typhoons. Most of the typhoons that visit our country would "pass by" or exit in Batanes, thus the province is almost always in the national weather news bulletins. Man-yi was already out of the Philippines' area of responsibility when I got to Basco. But despite that, I still experienced the frequent and peculiar 3-minute downpours. Likewise, the province is dubbed as the "playground of the wind" because the strong breeze blows constantly from all directions. I lost my camera's battery protector-cap with just one waft of the wind; that's how strong Batanes air current is.

The province of Batanes is composed of three major islands: Batan, Sabtang, and Itbayat. Other islands of Batanes Province are: Mavulis, Misanga, Ditarem, Siayan, Dinem, Dequey, and Ivujus. Batan Island is divided into four towns: Basco, where the province's capital and seat of government is located, Mahatao, Ivana, and Uyugan. Currently, the total population of Batanes Province is 15,656 (as of May 2000 census: 10,365 for Batan Island, 1,675 for Sabtang Island, and 3,616 for Itbayat island).

Getting To and Around Batanes

Currently, only Asian Spirit flies to Batanes Province from Manila. Flights of Manila to Basco and vice versa are scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Round trip airfare costs P10,800; Manila domestic airport passenger terminal fee costs P200 while Basco, Batanes passenger terminal fee costs P20.00 (plus protected area fee of P15.00). On the other hand, Chemtrad and Pacific Air have chartered flights to Basco from Tuguegarao and Laoag cities, respectively. Chemtrad flights to Basco from Tuguegarao and vice versa are scheduled every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while Pacific Air flights from Laoag to Basco and vice versa are scheduled depending on bookings.

Although there is an information center in Basco (the Philippine Information Agency of Batanes, which is manned by Ms. Necitas Alconis and where one could buy a tour magazine), I still hired a tour guide to accompany me in my sight-seeing. Tour guiding fees in Batanes costs P500 per day. I also rented a motorbike which my guide and I used in going around the island. Motorbike or scooter rental fees cost P1,200 per day (gasoline included); but if you are with a group, it would be cheaper to rent a van (P1,500 per day for non-air-conditioned, P2,200 per day for air-conditioned) or jeepney (P2,000 per day). Lucky for me, my host Vivian Vinalay had an officemate, Leonardo Garcia, who is into tour guiding and he only charged me P1,500 per day for the bike rental and guiding services.

Just in case you wanted to tour Batanes on your own, here are the following jeepney, boat and airfares:

Basco to Itbayat and vice versa (via Pacific Air) - P840.00 one way
Basco to Itbayat and vice versa (via Beacon Air) - P880.00 one way
Basco to Itbayat and vice versa (via Chemtrad) - P1,160.00 one way
Tricycle ride within Basco - P20.00
Jeepney ride from Basco to other parts of Batan Island and vice versa - P7.00 to 45.00
Ivana Port to Sabtang (via motorized boat called Sarao) - P40.00

Where To Stay in Batanes

I was fortunate enough to have a host family when I was in Batanes. However, just in case you happen to venture into the province and don't know anyone, there are many inns or lodging places where you could stay. There is the government-run Batanes Resort, which accommodations costs P550 per person per day for single occupancy, the Batanes Seaside Lodge and Restaurant (P450.00 to P800.00 per person per day), Ivatan Lodge (P300.00 to P1,000.00 per person per day), Shanedel's Inn and Café (P350.00 to P750.00 per person per day), and Pension Ivatan.

What and Where to Eat

Compared to the other provinces that I have visited, Batanes does not have many restaurants, bistros or cafes to dine in. Except for the lodging places which have cafés or restaurants, I had my meals and snacks at local "canteens". The canteens sell lutong-bahay viands and snacks such as spaghetti, pansit, ginataan, and the like, which meals could range from P50.00 to P70.00 per meal. It was in Sabtang Island that I was able to sample their local lobster, which only cost less than a hundred pesos each! Other Ivatan food that are a must-try for tourists are the yellow rice (rice with turmeric or ginger), the coconut crab, and their local lychee called chayi.

When in Ivana, I was able to eat at the Honesty Store. Indeed, the store does not have any storekeeper. Goods were on the shelves with a sign that says: "Take what you want and pay for them." The prices are posted on a wall and one would just have to drop her payment in a box. Try running a store like it here in Manila and surely you'd go bankrupt in a day!

What to See and Do

Lots and lots of sight-seeing. My guide toured me to see the "Marlboro Country", the last weather station of the Philippines, the houses of Pacita and Butch Abad, and the Japanese tunnel in Tukon. Likewise, he showed me the dormant volcano Mount Iraya, Mount Matarem, lots of grassy rolling hills, lighthouses, beaches, churches, fortresses, and old Ivatan stone houses of all kinds. We went around the towns of Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, and Uyugan in Batan Island, stopping for a while in the barangays of Vayang, Songsong, Itbud, San Vicente, Imnahbu and Valugan, and the communities of Sinakan, Savidug and the World Heritage Site of Chavayan in Sabtang Island. In Savidug, he showed me a pit where dead corals are "cooked" by the Ivatans to turn them into the native apog or white cement, which they used in binding the boulder-stones together in making or rebuilding the stone walls of the houses.

What To Bring

My host, Nanay Anita Vinalay, said that I am the only guest they had that the Ivatan mosquitoes enjoyed biting endlessly. Yes, there were mosquitoes and they were everywhere I went, and they bit me all time (morning, noontime, afternoon, night). So, if you don't want to leave Batanes with polka-dotted skin, bring your insect repellant.

Another thing that could be useful to bring, aside from things in your regular travel checklist, is a windbreaker-waterproof jacket. Unless you are traveling in the summer months, rainfall could be erratic in Batanes. So besides protecting your skin for the harmful rays of the sun with a sun block, best to have a light jacket or windbreaker as the Batanes winds could get pretty chilly and harsh.

Four days isn't enough to tour the Batanes Province. I have to cross out Itbayat Island from my itinerary because Chemtrad only flies to Itbayat on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only, and these flights depend on whether there would be enough passengers to fill up the 8-seater twin-engine propelled plane.

My return flight from Basco to Manila had been twice as long as my flight from Manila to Basco because instead of a jet plane, my carrier was a four-engine propelled plane which only flew at an altitude of 15,000 feet. Nonetheless, the return flight had been great as I was afforded a chance to take some aerial shots of Batanes and enjoy the Nothern Philippine's topography. It was only when I got home with the fishes and chayi (Mama was expecting bottled Strawberry jam and fresh Passion Fruit and Persimmon for pasalubong) that I told her where I've been adventuring to this time. Being a "gala" herself when she was my age, she understood and didn't reprimanded me. For sure I will be sending my new-found Ivatan friends a copy of this so… I'll see you all again soon! Dios mamajes!

(Note: If you are planning a trip to Batanes and would be needing a guide, you may contact my guide, Leonardo Garcia, at 0915-382-7136. He could take care of everything: accommodations, vehicle in going around the islands, island transfers, and meals.)

(index)

HR PERSPECTIVE by Jerico Buñing

INTEGRITY IN THE WORKPLACE

Quality and Productivity -- these are but two of the key elements organizations consider to remain competitive in the highly fast-paced global arena. To integrate these elements in the workplace would mean raising the bar of recruitment by looking for knowledge and skills as the core competencies of their potential employees. Though this is not bad, an equally important ingredient is seemingly taking the back seat. Employee attitude, character and habits have become secondary in importance. At times, leaders are in dilemma to choose between a technically competent person with a character problem and a trustworthy candidate but still lacking in skill. When the demand to fill the office is immediate, can a business unit afford to wait? Which choice is more expensive? The investment cost to train a trustworthy person or the losses that may result from character flaw? We know that the lack of skills and knowledge can be addressed by mentoring, coaching and training. But is there an organizational intervention that can address character problem?

Attitude and character are part and parcel of “integrity”. But what is integrity? Should it be a factor in a person’s effectiveness and development to perform one’s job? Should it matter in an organization?

Integrity, according to Richard Dortch, "involves everything about the wholeness of our inner person, our heart, mind and will. Integrity simply means singleness: Singleness of our purpose, singleness of our will, singleness of our hearts. There is no dividing of the truth that splits the wholeness of what we are about.” Mr. Dortch further explained that the prevailing duplicity in a person’s professional and private life is a manifestation of an eroding integrity.

Values are supposedly consistent regardless of time, place, culture and environment. The force that restrains us from doing certain activities when our superiors are around should also be present even when they are not. Similarly, the restraint to do certain actions in the presence of our family should also be felt when we are alone.

Integrity in Leadership

Critical to any organization’s character and culture is strongly defined by its leadership. "Leadership by example” is still one of the best approaches in leading the human capital. Below is a perfect story from the internet that depicts the principle of leading by example.

A lady reached Mahatma Gandhi with her 10-year old son. She told Gandhi, “Sir, my son has a bad habit of eating a lot of jaggery (a special kind of Indian sweets). I have been telling him to reduce eating jaggery but he does not listen to me. Mahatma Ji, the whole nation listens to you and you are a revered personality. I am sure my son too will heed to your advice. Please tell him not to eat too much of jaggery.” Mahatma Gandhi thought for a while and asked the lady to bring her son again after a week.

After a week, the lady again took her son to Mahatma. Mahatma Gandhi put his hand on the head of the boy and told him, “My dear child, don’t eat jaggery too much. It can be harmful”.

The conversation ended.

The bewildered lady asked the Mahatma, “Sir, this was simple. You could have told him the same thing last week itself!! Why you made us come again after a week?”

Mahatma told the lady,” I myself used to take jaggery till last week. I needed a weeks’ time to quit eating jaggery so that I could counsel your son with conviction”.

The lady bowed in reverence to Mahatma Gandhi and took leave of him.

Integrity is Humility and Sacrifice

Integrity is the strength of character that enables a person to admit failure regardless of what is at stake.

In the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), shocking news rocked the professional basketball industry when its hardworking Commissioner, Noli Eala, filed his immediate resignation before the Board of Trustees. Mr. Eala who rose from the ranks as a sportscaster and analyst before becoming the top honcho made a miraculous job of turning around the PBA as it reached its highest peak in terms of revenues, market share, gate attendance receipts and televiewers’ percentage in terms of popularity and prestige. Noli who is also a lawyer by profession was recently disbarred by a Supreme Court ruling due to acts of immorality or grossly misconduct. Based on the decision, he was found to having an extra-marital affair with a married woman, an offense punishable in the by-laws and ethics of lawyers.

“It is a painful decision brought about by a painful personal circumstance, but I have always believed that the PBA is bigger than any one man, one team, one player or one team owner” were the final words of Noli Eala when he presented his resignation to the press.

His disbarment or extramarital affair has nothing to do with his professional job where truly excels with but why did he resign? Not even the Board of Governors is asking him to leave his post. But why? Because that is how he truly loves the PBA, the organization, the players, coaches, staff and the fans. He is willing to suffer and sacrifice his own glory and power for the sake and welfare of the league he re-built.

My Personal Note

That for me is a real act of integrity in leadership.

It is almost a year that our beloved institution has turned into a university. As per our students’ sentiments, “bukod sa mga naggagandahang buildings at renovations, mayroon bang ipinagbago ang Trinity?”

So, is integrity important?

An organization is built in integrity. An individual with flawed character will not last in good organizations. Likewise, good people will not stay in bad organizations.

Our ability to lead is eroded when integrity is damaged. Our credibility to impose discipline and implement corporate values will be put in question. Character and attitude problems slow down an organization. Time and resources are wasted in the hiring and training of new employees brought by integrity related turnover. Time is also consumed in attending to administrative cases brought by employee dishonesty.

Lack of integrity in leadership will lose its ability to set an example and add value to others. Lack of integrity in the organization will lose its ability to correct itself, therefore, losing good employees either by resignation or conformation to the corrupt culture.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, a novelist, hit the nail when he said:

In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers… we are ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations.

Integrity… should it matter?

(INDEX)

EDITOR'S NOTES by Maria Cristina Gorrospe

A TIME FOR EVERYTHING UNDER HEAVEN

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:
A time to be born and a time to die,
A time to plant and a time to uproot,
A time to kill and a time to heal,
A time to tear down and time to build,
A time to weep and a time to laugh,
A time to mourn and a time to dance,
A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
A time to embrace and a time to refrain,
A time to search and a time to give up,
A time to keep and a time to throw away,
A time to tear and a time to mend,
A time to be silent and a time to speak,
A time to love and a time to hate,
A time for war and a time for peace.
(Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, 22)

I almost didn't do this column. Weeks ago, I was almost decided (isang langgam na lang ang di pumipirma ng consent niya) to drop the EIC-ship and have myself reduced to being mere article contributor/news correspondent and maybe the paper's layout artist. Don't ask me why I am letting go of something I started while in midair. Yes, it isn't me. Whenever I had something take off the ground, I see to it that it lands on the ground (if it had to land at all) safely too.

But lately, I think I have exposed myself to so many things than I should. Things are starting to get into me and it has affected the way I think, feel and sometimes act and speak. Odd as it may seem, I wanted to simply vanish into thin air or give everyone the proverbial "ma and pa" ("malay ko't pakialam ko") reply. Yes, again, this isn't me for most of the time, I am always a "concerned" person (but aren't all Trinitians always "concerned" persons?) and always have a ready answer for everyone.

And then, I was never a quitter. In 1990, Death played Let's-See-Who-Blinks-First with me and I won! I get rough when the going gets tough and it has been my nature to see what my abilities could do and where my limits would end. However, for the first time, I am thinking of morphing into a totally different person and have a different attitude (an indifferent attitude?). So what happened to my decision? Well, after seeing the sleepy towns of Batan and Sabtang Islands, I realized that it pays to stick to who you are and where you are… tough it out, ika nga.

A former mentor asked me not very long ago if I would ever change because it seems the world around me has and it is evident I am having difficulties existing in my changed world. Without batting an eyelash, I told her I cannot change. Not that I don't want to strengthen my weaknesses but I know she didn't mean that. For me, to change would be to totally forget who I am, what I am, and why I am where I am. Like the Ivatans who braved the unmercifully harsh weather just to preserve themselves, the land they inhabit, and the rich culture they have, so would I brave to be the "unchanged one" in a changed world.

I would admit, there is the great temptation for me, as Editor-in-Chief, to radically change the paper so it shall "cope with the changes". Since Trinity University of Asia has changed, why not change the nature of the paper too? But that would be going against the very reason why the paper was published. The paper was started to inform, enlighten and give a venue for the employees of the institution to learn skills and share the abilities they have, and not for it to be a freedom wall where personal opinions are aired. And this is why the Link doesn't have an Editorial Section.

"There is a season for every activity under heaven…" the Bible says. Well, this is not the season for me to turn my back on my peers who have just found their passions for writing for Link, nor is this a season for me to "disappear" and be tele-transported in another office in another company. "There is a time for everything under heaven…" it adds. The time for changes has come in Trinity University of Asia… unprecedented changes, if I may say so. But this is not a time for such change… not for me, not for the paper… not yet.

So, without further ado, on behalf of the publication advisers, editors and staff of Link, I welcome you all to the second year of the paper.

(INDEX)

THE ICT DIRECTOR IN PROFILE by Laurie Lee Bathan

To some of us in Trinity University of Asia (TUA), his winsome face may look familiar and his name may ring a bell. Well, you guys are not mistaken because our new Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Director is a true-blooded Trinitian and was part of our institution way back in the 1990s.

Dashing debonair “Robby”, as his friends and relatives fondly call him, is one of TUA’s additions in the family who undeniably has a fascinating and noteworthy personality. His blissful family life, good academic credentials, challenging stints with reputable companies and academic institutions, and exposure in a wide array of fields, coupled with memories of a challenging childhood, has molded him into a notable chap that he is today – successful yet humble despite his numerous achievements in life, seasoned yet eager to explore new challenges, and dedicated yet cool to listen and laugh at one’s amusing tales.

Rosauro Manuel is the second in a brood of five. Born in December 1, 1961, his parents brought him up in Quezon City together with his siblings. His fondest recollection of his juvenile days was when he started selling newspapers in La Loma at the age of ten. From a humble newspaper boy, much to the surprise of his parents, he later became the distributor of newspapers in the La Loma area when he was just fifteen years old. That experience may be far from what typical boys of his age enjoy but he believes that it has strengthened his character and molded him into a better being.

As what Robby’s parents impressed upon him, a person should obtain the right education to succeed in life. He had his primary and secondary schoolings at Ramon Magsaysay Elementary School and Lourdes School of Quezon City, respectively. While taking up a degree at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, his priority was somewhat diverted due to the excitement of facing a new challenge, that of having his first job at a well-known computer firm. However, recognizing the importance of education in the formation of one’s character, he continued pursuing his degree, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, from UP Diliman at Trinity College of Quezon City (TCQC). Once again, he proved that every battle could be won if one would persevere and put his right foot forward. Though he was already married and has three beautiful kids then, and indeed busy as a bee juggling his time between his work, family, and studies, he still managed to consistently land in the Dean’s list. As his career kicked off at SPI Technologies, Inc., he finished his bachelor’s degree with flying colors.

Consequently, Robby’s sheer determination catapulted him to a very successful and rewarding career at SPI Technologies, Inc. The various positions that he held in the said firm and his exposures on technically related activities like programming, systems development, and project development, among others, broadened his knowledge in the field of Information Technology (IT) and prompted him to fully embrace his profession. His efforts eventually paid off well when he was promoted as the Production Support Services Division Head in the same firm, thus further honing his management skills as he steered five technical departments namely: Software Development, Spec Analysis, Processing, Quality Control, and Statistics & Scheduling.

The lure of the academe brought Robby to back to TCQC (now TUA) in 1990. For almost eight years, he shared his knowledge and expertise with his alma mater where he later became the Computer Science (CS) Department Head. He was one of the key persons behind the success of the IT program in the College. Under his tutelage, the CS Department had reached its heyday. As a curriculum expert, he proposed the ladderized program in Computer Science from which our numerous students had benefited. As an educator, he taught different CS subjects with ease and grace must to the admiration of his students. As the thesis coordinator, he encouraged and guided the students in designing and developing systems that he believed would be useful to the College. As the department head, he had a way of motivating his subordinates to excel and give their best in imparting knowledge to the students. These were but some of the credits to his name during his stay in the College.

To explore other avenues, momentarily Robby left his alma mater in the 1998 and focused with his consultancy job at First Magna Corporation, where he was further exposed to the development of technical applications. As he continued working as a consultant in the aforementioned firm, bigger challenges came his way. He was tapped by the Far Eastern University (FEU) – East Asia College (EAC) to hold key administrative positions in 1998. Then, promotions came one after the other. He was appointed as the Management Information Systems (MIS) Director in 1998 until 2005. Then, he concurrently held the positions of Human Resource Director and Facilities Director for three years starting from 2003. After spending some time as director in said offices, he was promoted as the Acting Dean of the College of Computer Studies. Having proven his unwavering dedication and leadership, months after being the MIS Director, his career continued to flourish when he was appointed Registrar and ITE Graduate Program Director from middle of 2005 to 2006. His involvements with FEU-EAC for almost eight years provided him with a broad understanding of ICT and enhanced his management, academic, and technical skills.

Despite Robby’s very busy schedule, he was able to finish his degree in Master of Computer Science at the De La Salle University (DLSU). Currently, he is taking up a doctorate degree in Educational Management at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). He also keeps himself updated with the current trends in ICT by attending various seminars and trainings. Moreover, he is affiliated with two national IT organizations: the Philippine Computer Society (PCS) and the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE).

Truly, a wealth of opportunities awaits a dedicated and hardworking person. So, when an opportunity knocked on Robby’s door to work as Project Manager of the Information Technology Services at Lawson PSSC Inc., he grabbed it without an ounce of uncertainty. He saw it was a chance to be more adept at leading edge technologies in ICT. Obviously, lady luck seems to be smiling at him for he had once more made it at Lawson.

Robby would not have gone this far if not for his real inspirations -- his wife and children -- who are with him every step of the way, pouring out their love for him. The all-out support of his loving wife, Bong, and the sweet smiles of his daughters Monica Leigh, Marielle Lois, and Melyssa Lauren invigorate and inspire him.

Apart from his passion for computers, he enjoys playing basketball and chess during his spare time. Just like a typical head of the family, he sees to it that he spends quality time with his loved ones by engaging into sports together like bowling and badminton.

As David McCullough puts it, "Real success is finding your lifework in the work you love." At a time when his services are badly needed in TUA, he finds his way back if only to show his genuine concern and love for her. As a matter of fact, when his family and friends learned of his plans, they wondered why he would give up a high-paying consultancy job in favor of one where remuneration falls short in comparison. But he loves hurdling challenges. Not that he sees the job ahead of him at the university as purely a challenge; what thrilled him in accepting the directorship of ICT and the chairmanship of the CS Department is the vision of TUA President, Dr. Josefina Sumaya, to put up a College of Computing & Information Sciences and establish the university as a Center of IT Excellence. This vision struck him and set his track. From tranquil water, he decided to tread his way to rough yet challenging voyage. As TUA's new ICT Director, Robby is now faced with a bigger challenge of realizing the dream of the University President. Nonetheless, with his kind -- one who eyes his goals seriously and pursues them incessantly -- he is very much capable of steering the wheel towards a successful journey.

(INDEX)

THE ALTRUISTIC E.G.O. by Maria Cristina Gorrospe

"Aim high.", "Focus.", "Work hard.", "Seek divine intervention.", "Achieve your goals.", "The biggest room on earth is the room for improvement." and "Recognize your weaknesses and improve them." are the philosophies Dr. Eduardo Gutierrez Ong live by. He dreams a legacy of service to his fellowmen, most especially the youth, through quality education and technology.

Born to Jose Tan Ong Huy and Valeriana Gutierrez in Malabon, Metro Manila, "EG", as he is fondly called by family and friends, belongs to a brood of six children. He is a very loving and caring son to his parents, going out of his way to serve and please them every moment he gets. Even though they are already deceased (his mother died last year), he continuously shows his affection and thoughtfulness to them by visiting their graves at least once a month, offer prayers for them, and invoke their guidance in the various endeavors he pursues.

EG has two sons, Raymond Edward and Eduardo Jr., whom he equally loves. He is a good provider and took care of his children who are now gainfully employed. He would see to it that he spends quality time with them, most especially during their growing years. He loves to read books, magazines and other materials that enhance knowledge. He also loves watching movies, playing golf and traveling.

EG started his schooling at the Philippine Chinese Yok Lin School, where he graduated 3rd Honor. He had his Secondary/High School education at the Jose Rizal High School (JRHS) where he was given the Leadership Award. He pursued a degree in Commerce (BSC) at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) where he earned awards for Outstanding Leadership and Academic Excellence. After college but still in UST, he enrolled in law school and earned a degree in Bachelor of Laws (Ll.B.). Then, he proceeded to take his Masters in Business Administration (MBA), then Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Commerce and graduated Magna Cum Laude (Benemeritus). And as if one doctorate degree is not enough, he enrolled in Trinity University of Asia's Graduate School and finished his Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) in 2005.

A very dedicated, conscientious, hardworking and very focused worker, it is of no wonder that EG is a very respected management and public relations consultant, educator, real estate broker and consultant, arbitrator/mediator, and entrepreneur. He worked himself up, from a mere storekeeper at the Malabon Public Market at the age of 12, EG became the President and Chief Executive Officer of various corporations engaged in real estate, business consultancy, and the academe at the age of 40. He was conferred Diplomate in Business Education (DBE) by the Philippine Academy of Professionals in Business Education. He does not like hypocrites and pretenders. When asked what he liked most in Trinity University of Asia, he said, "TUA has a very conducive academic environment. It gives its faculty and students (the) chance to develop and hone their skills and competencies. It provides good opportunity for learning and research. Mr. Regalado also attends to the clinic's clients on Saturdays (7:00 am - 12:00 nn). Aside from this, the clinic's equipment are constantly being upgraded to better serve the Trinitian community. Ms. Benigno and Mr. Regalado can easily provide first aid treatment during accidents as both nurses underwent training for Basic Life Support and First Aid Management under the Philippine National Red Cross.

Fulltime school dentist, Dr. James Olayvar, still heads both the Basic Education and the College Dental Clinics, which both are equipped for handling dental services like consultations and examinations, oral prophylaxis, temporary filling, extractions and emergency treatments. Aforementioned services can be availed of free-of-charge by both students and employees. Dr. Olayvar is assisted by Ms. Ma. Imelda Peñaranda, dental aide and dental clinic secretary.

The Trinity University of Asia College Medical and Dental Clinics are temporarily housed inside the Henry Noble Gymnasium. In a year or two, said clinics will be permanently transferred to a 7-storey building, which will house the different student services units of Medical and Dental Clinic, Chaplain’s Office, Office of Student Affairs and other student service units.

Both the medical and dental teams are headed by the University's Medical Director, Dr. Bienvenido Gaddi, who has managed the Clinics for 35 years. Under his supervision, the teams are continuously finding ways to offer the best health assistance to the school's students and employees.

All in all, our goal is to present a genuine and the best feasible care all the Trinitians deserve. Our mission and vision is still the same, to give every student and member of the staff the opportunity to build and maintain good health in order that he may enjoy the benefits of his academic life and perform to his optimum capacity.

(INDEX)

SLCN HOLDS ANNUAL VITALIANA G. Dr. Matunog is an alumna of SLCN (batch 1982) and is the first and only nursing student who graduated Magna Cum Laude. The VGBLS will be attended by students, faculty, and alumni of SLCN and invited nurses from different hospitals in Metro Manila.

(INDEX)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tua-link.blogspot.com/2007/10/slcn-holds-annual-vitaliana-g-beltran.html' title='SLCN HOLDS ANNUAL VITALIANA G. Dr. Adela G. Gillette, Dean of said college, was appointed Acting Principal of the Basic Education Department in lieu of the retirement of its former principal, Dr. La Paz G. Brito.

According to Dr. Epitacio S. Palispis, Vice President for Academic Affairs, a close tie-up between the College of Education and Basic Education was undertaken to strengthen the Teacher-Training College (CED) and Basic Education. He emphasized that under the new teacher education curriculum, a need to introduce new subjects, like Field Studies 1-6, is imperative wherein the professors are expected to teach their students how the principles and theories are applied in actual teaching.

Dr. Palispis added that said restructuring was likewise done for the convenience of the Education students because once the CED office was moved in to the Basic Education campus, they do not need to go back and forth from the main campus of the University to the Basic Education Campus, which served as the laboratory of the student-teachers. The transfer of the CED office will materialize by semester upon completion of the renovations, repair and face-lifting of the Basic Education campus.

Dr. Palispis further said that as emphatically announced by the management and contrary to the rumor, the Basic Education will not be dissolved. It will continue to operate; TUA management continually endeavors to enhance the areas of concerns in the Basic Education, such as teaching skills of the faculty, faculty profile, revision of the Basic Education curricula, and revitalization of other academic programs that are relevant to the needs of changing times.

These shall be done by equipping the teachers with current trends and innovations thru in-house seminars and trainings and encouraging them to pursue graduate and post-graduate studies. Dr. Palispis finally said that TUA management envisions the Basic Education, like that of other special schools, to excel in a certain field someday.

(INDEX)
