SLCN HOLDS COPAR TRAINING by Bea Cruz

Trinity University of Asia - St. Luke's College of Nursing had a two-day training course on Community Organizing Participatory Action Research (COPAR) last August 11-12 at the Great Eastern Hotel, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City with 25 faculty participants from different year levels of said college.

COPAR is one of the indispensable research methodologies in community welfare and people empowerment. The seminar was conducted to disseminate information on the essence of COPAR in producing quality research outputs and community development programs for adopted communities of TUA.

Dr. Emmanuel Luna, a celebrated COPAR expert, was the training's resource speaker. Involved in COPAR both locally and abroad, specifically Cambodia, Bangladesh and Thailand, Dr. Luna is a fulltime professor of the Department of Social Work and Community Development. He was awarded citations twice by the Philippines and has received an international publication award for his researches in Community-Based Disaster Management. His publications and researches have been quoted and used as sources of information by some international papers on disaster management.

Last summer, Dr. Luna initially worked with the community health faculty to facilitate the identification of COPAR variables in their research; said workshop was a continuation of TUA-SLCN's plans on COPAR output. Dr. Luna is currently a volunteer Research-Community Development Consultant for TUA-SLCN, which is part of his extension work as a professor of the University of the Philippines.
